Creativity circa 1983. How many of our schools are stuck there today?

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Helping Students Use Creative Commons Images in Presentations
Wes Fryer always has great insights into improving multimedia instruction! This is an important topic that should gain some traction in our schools locally. Librarians have spent too much time telling students/tchrs what they can’t do–it’s time to turn that around and give them tools & tell them what they can do! Of course, over-filtered school networks hamper, and in many cases, make moot this point! I think at the very least librarians and teachers should be aware and work to be proficient in using CC items.

Google Hangouts Guide for Teachers
This will be handy, I think. I find Google Hangouts less than intuitive. Am I alone in that? Anyway, hopefully this resource will clear some of that up!

- BFTP: The danger of irrelevance – Home – Doug Johnson’s Blue Skunk BlogPrensky’s idea of digital natives/immigrants has long bothered me, because I see that it is not correct. Many of my young students come to school with fairly sophisticated tech skills–that is, my primarily white & affluent students! Many of our less affluent, (and coincidentally, our not-Caucasian students) come to school with a far thinner tech experiential base to pull from. Our kids aren’t natives–their tech skills are not magically endowed upon them at birth. They need experiences and opportunity first–and for many kids, that is at school! AND they need guidance from knowledgeable adults! Again, Blue Skunk is spot on. tags: dougjohnson 4librarians 4tchrs
- All children “can” learn or “will” learn? – Home – Doug Johnson’s Blue Skunk Blog
- Wow! Doug Johnson is on a roll these days! I so LOVE the first portion of this post. I too am suspect of such admonitions as “every student will learn” and “more rigor!” (Again, I revert to the definition of rigor in my mind, and think surely we can do better!) But I digress…

Kindergarten Kids At Play: Tech Tip Tuesday: Make Your Worksheets With Powerpoint Instead Of Word
Seems like a simple suggestion, and one that is hardly worthy of discussing. I’ve done this for years! I know that many people haven’t made this switch though, and it’s a simple switch that will make your life easier if you care about the placement of graphcis & the overall graphic design of your final piece.
BONUS: Ppt is so much more friendly than Publisher to use, that I wonder why people ever use Publisher in the first place! Publisher is difficult to open if you’re not a MS Office Suite sort of person (zamzar will do it in a pinch though), and if you hone your skills, there’s not much that you can do with it that isn’t also available in Ppt.

Note-taking Effectiveness in the Digital Classroom Infographic | e-Learning Infographics
Interesting infographic about most effective means of taking notes. Did you know that taking notes helps students to remember up to 80% of a lecture after 70 days? Effective note-taking is an essential skill for our students–how can we facilitate their learning to do it effectively?

8 Wonderful Blooms Taxonomy Posters for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning
Wow! This is a great roundup of new (to me) and interesting graphics of the NEW Bloom’s Taxonomy! The official, updated Bloom’s is reflected in most of these posters (not on #4 though) & is significantly different from the old one in that there are now 5 rather than 6 levels, the most complex level being CREATING.
How often do students get the opportunity in school to fully attain that level?
Change will take a shift in thinking. -

- Closing The ‘Word Gap’ Between Rich And Poor : NPRBy the age of 3, children born into low-income families hear roughly 30 million fewer words than their more affluent peers. What can we do to control for that in public schools?tags: 4librarians 4tchrs reading poverty
